For today's post, we will be talking about how God orchestrates good communication and how we can understand each other better. Let me know in the comments if there are any tips that I don't mention in this blog post!
D&C 1:24 states, "Behold, I am God and have spoken it; these commandments are of me, and were given unto my servants in their weakness, after the manner of their language, that they might come to understanding." Whenever we think about language and communication, we tend to think of our own natural language and speaking a different one.
While that is definitely true and definitely a part of language, another big factor is that language changes over time. Think about it; our Forefathers spoke English, but it was pretty different from the English we speak today. For example, John Adams said, "Liberty must at all hazards be supported. We have a right to it, derived from our Maker. But if we had not, our fathers have earned and bought it for us, at the expense of their ease, their estates, their pleasure, and their blood." While I am sure that we can understand what John Adams is saying, it is definitely more formal diction than we would use today.
How should we communicate with each other if we can't understand each other? I don't think there is always an easy solution. People can definitely listen, but they don't understand. As children of God, understanding Him and others is a futile part of His plan. For some ideas, you can use a translator, read their body language and eye contact, and, most importantly, have a humble attitude with their perspective.
